چکیده

Treating NH3-loaded gases is necessary for improved livestock management. Nitrification, the sequential oxidation of NH3 to NO3? via NO2?, an important microbial process effective long-term removal. Denitrification, a respiration that reduces and NO2? N2 under anaerobic conditions, can also contribute nitrogen conversion in biofiltration systems. Understanding these processes imperative control removal better achieve balance biofiltration. In this review, we discuss functions compositions community responsible nitrification denitrification system, along with relationship between mass balance. Our results indicate both could be achieved by consortium microbes well adapted ecosystem full-scale biofilter. Moreover, was controlled substrate availability. Nitrogen potential up 39% laboratory-scale biofilter intermittent water recirculation, unknown loss considered mainly denitrified. Under gradual accumulation nitrogenous compounds, gamma proteobacterial group contributes oxidization. These findings will improve our understanding fluctuations complex behavior nitrifiers denitrifiers within system.

Characteristics of the microbial community associated with ammonia oxidation in a full-scale rockwool biofilter treating malodors from livestock manure composting.

The relationship between the activity and community structure of microbes associated with the oxidation of ammonia in a full-scale rockwool biofilter was examined by kinetic, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and sequence analyses. The packing materials were sampled from two different depths at 3 sites. Estimated K(m) values were similar among depths at same sampling sites, while ...

Microbial Community in a Biofilter for Removal of Low Load Nitrobenzene Waste Gas

To improve biofilter performance, the microbial community of a biofilter must be clearly defined. In this study, the performance of a lab-scale polyurethane biofilter for treating waste gas with low loads of nitrobenzene (NB) (< 20 g m-3 h-1) was investigated when using different empty bed residence times (EBRT) (64, 55.4 and 34 s, respectively). In addition, the variations of the bacterial com...

Continuous deodorization and bacterial community analysis of a biofilter treating nitrogen-containing gases from swine waste storage pits.

A biofilter inoculated with Arthrobacter sp. was applied to the simultaneous elimination of trimethylamine (TMA) and ammonia (NH3) from the exhaust air of swine waste storage pits. The results showed that the biofilter achieved average removal efficiencies of 96.8+/-2.5% and 97.2+/-2.3% for TMA and NH3, respectively. A near-neutral pH (7.3-7.4) was maintained due to the accumulation of acid met...

Ammonia Emissions from a Commercial Poultry Manure Composting Facility

Composting is an effective waste management technology for converting animal wastes into valuable organic fertilizer. However, air emissions from composting, especially ammonia (NH3) emission, reduces the nitrogen fertilizer value of the compost and greatly impacts the environment. Ammonia emission from commercial composting facilities is not well understood and is limiting mitigation or recove...
